When to seek urgent care instead. Physical therapy is not the right first step for every symptom. Seek immediate medical care for severe trauma, chest pain, sudden weakness or numbness, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, loss of bladder or bowel control, or any symptom that feels like an emergency. Call 911 if you may be experiencing a medical emergency.
